Going Green and Giving Back

At New York Road Runners, we work hard to ensure that the TCS New York City Marathon and all our events are conducted with an awareness of their impact on the environment, and that extra resources are donated to those in need. We're proud of the efforts of our runners, spectators, volunteers, and staff to meet these goals.

At the 2015 TCS new York City Marathon, we donated 125,000 pounts of clothing and 20,000 pounds of food, and we recycled 264,000 pounds of materials, for a total of 409,000 pounds of donated and recycled materials.

Race Day
.

  • Clothing and Materials:

    • 264,000 pounds of material was recycled at the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon.
    • 20,000 pounds of food was collected and donated.
    • 125,000 pounds of clothing was collected at the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon. Items were donated to Goodwill Industries of New York and New Jersey.
  • Transportation:

    • Well over half of runners travel to the start via mass transportation, including more than 21,400 taking the Staten Island Ferry.
  • Heatsheet Recycling:

    • We use Blankets to Boards™, an innovative recycling partnership with Trex® Company; this free program allows us to repurpose our Heatsheets™ in the United States, which reduces shipping costs and keeps energy usage to a minimum.
  • Food:

    • 20,000 pounds of food from the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon finish line was donated to City Harvest.
    • We use locally sourced apples from the New York Apple Association, the official apple of the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon. The apples are distributed to TCS New York City Marathon finishers and at other events during race week.
  • Toilets

    • A Royal Flush, Inc., our toilet vendor, is constantly making an effort to be more environmentally friendly. Their sustainability efforts include:
      • Portable toilets made with the highest recycled plastic content available (35-40% post-consumer recycled plastic).
      • 100% recycled toilet paper.
      • A powerful degreaser and cleaner that is citrus-based and doesn't contain any nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) found in in other commercial detergents.
      • A deodorizer that is non-formaldehyde-based.
      • A sister company has partnered with a local bio-diesel company to truck in used cooking grease that they process and turn into bio-diesel, which fuels their trucks.
      • They have developed a way to safely and efficiently recover rainwater that we use to fill the toilets upon delivery and after they are serviced. This accounts for 30-40% of their water use.

At the Expo
.

Working with our partner Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, we've made the TCS New York City Marathon Health and Fitness Expo greener than ever:

  • There are designated recycling and trash bins on the show floor

  • The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center has energy-efficient fluorescent lighting and is currently in the process of retrofitting the entire building by replacing lights with LEDs

  • We encourage visitors and runners to take public transportation to and from the Expo. The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center is easy to reach via subway—take the 7 train to the brand new 34th Street-Hudson Yards stop. M34 and M12 buses also stop outside the building
